Philadelphia's Fairmount Park
Trolley: 1896 - 1946
The Fairmount Park Transportation
Company spared no expense in building a world-class facility.
Trolleys crossed the Schuylkill River on a massive steel bridge placed roughly
midway between the Girard Avenue and Falls bridges.
Constructed by Phoenix Bridge Company, the span opened to trolley, pedestrian,
carriage, and bicycle traffic on June 13, 1897.
Because the trolley company could not afford expensive repairs, in 1939 ownership
was turned over to the City of Philadelphia.
Today Strawberry
Mansion Bridge carries automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
