Philadelphia Trolley Tracks: Hydro-Powered
Trolleys
Aerial photo of Lock 60 showing
what remains of the hydro-electric power station. The roof and brick walls are
gone, but the concrete floor remains.
In the lower right portion of the image, two of the three concrete plugs in
the floor are clearly visible. The plugs mark the locations of the generating
turbines.
Beginning in 1914, hydro-electric
power generated near Phoenixville powered Reading Transit & Light trolleys in
Montgomery County.
Located at Lock 60 on the Schuylkill River, three hydro-electric turbines sent
electricity 4 miles to the RT&L power house in Collegeville.
