Philadelphia's Fairmount Park
Trolley: 1896 - 1946
This excerpt of the 1944 Philadelphia
Transportation Company map shows the route of the Fairmount Park trolley.
Most of the map has been faded back so that the Fairmount Park trolley is more
visible.
[The Fairmount Park trolley was not part of the city-wide PTC transit system.
FPT was a separate, private company.]
The three mile loop through West Park -- Fairmount Park west of the Schuylkill
River -- was single track.
Fairmount Park trolleys always looped West Park in a counter-clockwise direction.
The two mile spur to Parkside & Belmont Avenue, and the half mile spur over
the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, were double track.
During spring summer and fall, trolleys beginning at Parkside & Belmont
rounded the loop and returned to Parkside;
trolleys beginning at 33rd & Dauphin in North Philadelphia rounded the loop
and returned to 33rd & Dauphin.
Only during winter months did trolleys run through from Parkside & Belmont Ave.
to 33rd & Dauphin.
Fairmount Park Transit Company was under no obligation to provide service during winter months but did so anyway.
