Philadelphia's Fairmount Park
Trolley: 1896 - 1946
The Fairmount Park Transit
Co. barn has been emptied of trolleys, following the end of service in the autumn
of 1946.
The men gathered are attending the public auction of the trolley line including
rails, overhead wires, bridges and trolleys.
PTC attempted to duplicate park trolley service with a new bus line running
on city streets, designated Route 85.
The Route 85 bus followed a circuitous route over the City Line Avenue bridge
because by 1946 the roadway deck
of the Strawberry Mansion Bridge had deteriorated to the point that it could not safely support the weight of a bus.
The date of this photograph November 6, 1946.
